The European Central Bank embarked on a Quantitative Easing program starting in 2015

  • Began buying sovereign bonds in 2015
  • Began buying corporate bonds in 2016
  • Expected to end in late 2018 or 2019 (as of Dec 2018)
  • Grew ECB balance sheet by 4.65 Trillion Euros (up 117%) (30% EU GDP)
  • Had the impact of driving down rates - to negative interest rate territory (and below inflations)
