Hannes Meissner is an internationally recognized expert on political risk analysis and management with a long history in business consulting. Hannes is a Managing Partner at LM Political and Strategy Advisory, a provider of political risk management solutions, and a Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Competence Center for Black Sea Studies at the University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna. With expertise in multinational companies with a focus on the post-Soviet space, his research focuses on state capture, informal networks and their consequences for MNEs, such as systemic corruption, clientelism, deficient property rights and weak rule of law. He is known for developing innovative hands-on business approaches where he tailors interdisciplinary models to the requirements of enterprises operating in complex and risky country environments. Hannes’ long-standing work experience on-site in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan has provided him with the insights essential to following his passion—enabling businesses to prosper in markets shaped by political risk.

Professional Experience

RESEARCH & EXPERTISE

  • His research interests include political risk, post-Soviet states, the "resource curse", and governance and institutions.

  • His post-Soviet space expertise includes a region that he has traveled extensively due to both business projects and scientific field research.

  • He conducted extensive field research in Azerbaijan (2009/2010) and Turkmenistan (2010) for his dissertation on “The Resource Curse in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan and the Perspectives of Transparency and Efficiency Initiatives”.

  • During this time he was also a PhD Fellow at the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg/

  • He worked on the research program "Corruption and Informal Networks" at the research Center for Eastern Europe at the University of Bremen.


HONORS & RECOGNITIONS

  • Hannes Meissner received a doctoral scholarship from the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAS)

  • He received a full scholarship from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.


PUBLICATION

  • He co-authored State Capture, Political Risks and International Business, with LM co-managing partner Johannes Leitner.

  • Uniting theoretical approaches and empirical insights, it examines Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.

  • Each chapter deals with country specific forms of state capture and the associated political risks bridging the gap between political analysis and business related impacts.


MEDIA & APPEARANCES

  • He regularly gives talks on political risk, most recently at the Chinese Economic Summit in Hong Kong and the Astana International Financial Center.

  • He appeared at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendael and the University of Cambridge.

  • He regularly holds seminars at the University of Vienna and the University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna.

  • He has, moreover, given guest lectures at partner universities abroad, in particular the Beykoz School of Logistics in Istanbul, JAMK University of Applied  Sciences in Jyväskyla and the Southern Federal University Rostov na Donu.
