Sergey Gorbunov is the Co-founder and CEO of Axelar, the developer of a universal interoperability platform that connects blockchain ecosystems, applications, and users. At Axelar, Sergey works on building systems and protocols that protect data and information in untrusted, distributed, and highly adversarial environments. He is passionate about enabling new types of applications that have built-in trust and security properties and allow users to share, exchange, and compute information without having to trust each other or any third party. Sergey is an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo and was on the founding team of Algorand, where he worked on the core platform design and development and led the cryptography group. Sergey is also a co-author of many cryptocurrency protocols, standards, and systems.
EARLY CAREER
His Ph.D. dissertation focused on designing cryptographic tools for the cloud using lattice-based cryptography.
He received the Sprowls Doctoral Thesis Award for best thesis in CS at MIT.
