The Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) designates which sector a company's stock belongs to

  • Changes to GICS designations can have be impacts on market indexes:
    •  Exampel:
      • In 2018 the Telecom Sector was changed to be called the "Communication Services Sector
      • Disney, Netflix, Facebook, Google & Comcast were all added to this sector
      • The sector went from ~3% of the S&P 500 to ~10%
