Primary Dealer

Primary Dealers are the primary banks that the Federal Reserve works with

  • Means that a bank is on an approved list for deal with the open market desk at the Fed
  • It is a "small club"
  • There is no "primary dealer" license - it is a business relationship with the Fed
  • Within the list of primary dealers, the Fed has historically maintained favorites
