The Bank for International Settlements is a bank for central banks. It is the oldest global financial institution and operates under the auspices of international law. BIS aims to promote global monetary and financial stability through the coordination of global central banks and their monetary policy efforts. But from its inception to the present day, the role of the BIS has been ever-changing as it adapts to the dynamic global financial community and its needs.

  • It is owned by the central banks of individual countries
  • It "fosters international monetary and financial cooperation and serves as a bank for central banks
  • Some say it's not really a central bank - it's more of a "host of meetings" for the central banks
    • The BIS doesn't really make any decisions, but hosts Central Bankers who make decisions.
    • It's place where central bankers can exchange views and information
