Moody's Corporation assigns ratings on the basis of assessed risk and the borrower's ability to make interest payments. Its ratings are closely watched by many investors. Moody's history dates back to "Moody's Manual" — a series of manuals which provided general information about stocks and bonds; it was originally published in 1900. In 1975, the U.S. SEC made Moody's a Nationally Recognized Statistical Rating Organization.
