Cathy O'Neil is a renowned data scientist, mathematician, and bestselling author who aims to uncover the dark secrets of big data to show how objective algorithms could reinforce human bias. She taught mathematics at Barnard College before switching over to the private sector, working as a quantitative analyst for D.E. Shaw in the middle of the credit crisis. O'Neil left finance in 2011 and started working as a data scientist in the New York start-up scene, building models that predicted people’s purchases and clicks.
