Joshua Wong is one of the leading Hong Kong pro-democracy activists and was the Secretary General of the now disbanded Demosistō, a pro-democracy organization that advocated for self-determination in Hong Kong. Wong entered the political scene in 2011, at the age of 14, when he founded Scholarism and successfully protested against the enforcement of Chinese National Education in Hong Kong. He first rose to international prominence during the 2014 Hong Kong protests as one of the faces of the Umbrella Revolution. He also played a major role in persuading US politicians to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act during the 2019-2020 Hong Kong protests. Since the beginning of the Hong Kong protests, Wong has been convicted and jailed multiple times along with his fellow activists.

  • Wong has been the subject of two documentaries, including the Netflix original Joshua: Teenager vs Superpower.

  • He has been named one of the world's most influential leaders by TIME, Fortune, Prospect, and Forbes.

  • He was nominated for TIME's 2014 Person of the Year and was further called one of the "world's greatest leaders" by Fortune magazine in 2015.

  • He was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.
