Marty Cagan is the guru of the product community. Marty is the Co-founder and Partner of Silicon Valley Product Group, a management consulting firm that shares senior level experience for tech-based companies. Marty has been responsible for business strategy, product strategy, product management, product design, user experience and product development process for leading Internet companies. Over the past 30 years, he has defined and built products for some of the most successful companies in the world, including Hewlett-Packard, Netscape Communications, America Online, and eBay. Throughout his career, Marty has personally performed and managed most of the roles of a modern software product organization, including product management, software development, product marketing, user experience design, software testing, engineering management, and general management. He is also the author of the books INSPIRED: How to Create Products Customers Love and EMPOWERED: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Products.

EARLY CAREER & EXPERTISE

  • Marty began his career as a software developer at HP, where he conducted research on software tech and built several software products for other developers.

  • After HP, he joined Netscape Communications, where he had the opportunity to participate in the birth of the Internet industry.

  • He worked directly for co-founder Marc Andreessen, where he was VP for Netscape’s platform and tools, and later e-commerce applications.

  • He was SVP of Product and Design for eBay, responsible for defining products and services for the company’s global e-commerce trading site.

  • He worked directly alongside Marc Andreesen and Ben Horowitz at Netscape and Pierre Omidyar at eBay.

  • He specializes in defining successful products, building effective product teams, and improving product development processes.
