Nate Hagens is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for the Study of Energy and Our Future. He has been studying the interrelationships between energy, environment, and finance and the implication this synthesis has for human futures since 2003. Hagens is a highly regarded speaker on the big picture issues facing human society. He continues to work with leading ecologists, energy experts, and systems thinkers to form a cohesive description and roadmap of where our society is headed and what we should do about it.

  • Hagens teaches Reality 101 – A Survey of the Human Predicament, a systems synthesis Honors Seminar at the University of Minnesota.
  • He has appeared in various films and television shows, including PBS, BBC, ABC, and NPR.
  • He has lectured around the globe on issues of energy and sustainability. 
  • His presentations address the opportunities and constraints we face after the coming peak of global economic growth
  • On the supply side, he focuses on the interrelationship between debt-based financial markets and natural resources.
  • He focuses on energy and the unique risks from the coming Great Simplification.  
  • On the demand side, he addresses the evolutionarily-derived underpinnings to status, addiction, and our aversion to acting about the future.
  • He offers suggestions on how individuals and society might better adapt to the coming decades. 
  • He was lead editor of The Oil Drum, one of the most popular and respected websites for analysis and discussion of global energy supplies and the future implications of the upcoming energy transition.
