Stephen Squeri is the Chairman and CEO of American Express, a leading, globally integrated payments company. He has held many positions during his 38 years at American Express and successfully globalized the business. Since becoming Chairman and CEO in 2018, Steve has been executing an enterprise-wide strategy focused on delivering sustainable, long-term growth by strategically investing in the company’s colleagues, customers and brand. Under his leadership, AMEX has launched innovative new payment financial management and lifestyle services, expanded strategic partnerships, enhanced its digital capabilities, repositioned its international organization to seize on growth opportunities, and expanded its merchant network globally. Steve began his career as a Management Consultant at Arthur Andersen. In addition to his corporate role, he is an active supporter in the local community.
Steve joined American Express in 1985 as a manager of the Travellers Cheque Group.
Prior to becoming Chairman and CEO, Steve served in a number of senior roles across the company, leading its enterprise-wide shared services functions, commercial services business, technology functions, and Establishment Services in the U.S. and Canada.
His previous roles include Vice Chairman of American Express Company, Group President of Global Corporate Services, Group President of Global Services and Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer.
Under his leadership, the company's investments have helped drive generational relevance with consumers, including Millennial and Gen Z customers, and expand its offerings for small and medium-sized enterprises.
His commitment to backing customers, colleagues and communities has enabled the company to successfully navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and introduce an ambitious new long-term growth plan in January 2022.
