US companies are banned from undertaking share buybacks before they release earnings

  • The time when companies can buy is called the "Stock Buyback Window"
  • The SEC imposes a “blackout period” in anticipation of earnings when corporations and execs aren’t allowed to buy or sell shares of company stock. 
  • Stocks might go up after a blackout period because corporations add more buying pressure
