Merceds Law

The Mercedes Law is a nickname for a law that was passed in 1988 that prohibits certain features on imported vehicles.

  • The law has a large list of features that are prohibited
    • Smog and Emissions standards
    • Rear Facing Seats
    • Etc.
  • Mercedes led the lobbying efforts behind this law (though to limit foreign competition within the US)
  • Enacted by US Congress in 1998
  • Keeps many models of foreign cars that are popular in other countries out of the United States
  • There is an exemption for 'antique' cars that are at least 25 years old
