John Fichthorn is Head of Alternative Investments for B. Riley Capital Management, a wholly owned subsidiary of B. Riley Financial. He has over 25 years of investment analysis and fund management experience, and has fundamental value approach across multiple strategies, liquid and private, with expertise in corporate governance from serving on multiple public and private boards. Previously, he was Co-founder and Partner at Dialectic Capital Management, an investment management firm founded by Luke and John in 2003. Prior to that, he was Managing Director of the technology group at Maverick Capital, and an Analyst at Alliance Capital and Quilcap Corporation. In 2014, John Fichthorn financed the movie Betting on Zero by creating Biltmore Films with co-founder Burke Koonce.
EARLY CAREER
He was a Managing Director of Maverick Capital's Technology Group where he served for three years.
As an Analyst for Alliance Capital, he worked across multiple hedge fund products and was a Member of the technology team.
He was an Analyst for Quilcap Corporation, where he covered all sectors, with a focus on technology.
He also worked at Ganek & Orwicz Partners where his responsibilities included small cap research, international closed-end fund arbitrage and operations.
He was frequently a guest on CNBC’s Halftime Report during his time at Dialectic.
BETTING ON ZERO
Betting on Zero chronicles the $1 billion bet Bill Ackman made in 2012 against Herbalife, a manufacturer of dietary supplements.
Ackman believed that Herbalife was a pyramid scheme disguised as a multi-level marketing venture and predicted that the share price of Herbalife, trading under ticker HLF, would eventually fall to zero.
