Dr. Neel Burton is a Fellow of Green-Templeton College at the University of Oxford. He is a highly regarded psychiatrist, philosopher, and educator who lives and teaches in Oxford, England. Dr. Burton is also a well-renowned writer whose works have been featured in major publications, including Aeon and Psychology Today. He has also authored more than 20 books that have been translated into several languages, including Chinese, Japanese, German, Italian, and Portuguese.

EARLY LIFE AND CAREER

  • Burton was born in 1978 in Curepipe, Mauritius to a Mauritian father and a Zanzibari mother.
  • He mostly grew up in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • He studied medicine and neuroscience in London from 1996 to 2002.
  • He subsequently moved to Paris, where he worked as a strategy consultant and, later, as an English teacher.
  • He went up to Oxford in 2004 to specialize in psychiatry, while simultaneously getting his Master’s in Philosophy.
  • When he is not reading or writing, he enjoys cooking, gardening, skiing, learning languages, visiting museums and gardens, and traveling, especially to sunny wine regions.
