United States Senator Rand Paul is one of the country's leading advocates for liberty. As a fierce advocate against government overreach, Dr. Paul has fought tirelessly to return government to its limited, constitutional scope. He has proven to be an outspoken champion for constitutional liberties and fiscal responsibility. Prior to joining politics, Dr. Paul practiced as an ophthalmologist for 18 years. During his free time, he performs pro-bono eye surgeries for patients across Kentucky. Additionally, he provides free eye surgery to children from around the world. Paul is a son of former three-time presidential candidate and 12-term U.S. representative from Texas, Ron Paul.

Academic History

UNITED STATES SENATE

  • Rand Paul is a prominent politician serving as the Junior United States Senator from Kentucky.

  • He is a member of the Republican Party and has described himself as a constitutional conservative.

  • He championed various Tea Party–approved proposals, including massive cuts in federal spending.

  • Consistent with his generally libertarian position, Paul’s proposed cuts involved not only social programs but also defense allocations.

  • Paul was re-elected in 2016 and in 2022. He will become Kentucky's senior senator in 2027 when Mitch McConnell leaves the Senate.


MEDICAL CAREER

  • Dr. Paul completed a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, Ga., and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center. 

  • Upon completion of his training in 1993, Dr. Paul and Kelley moved to Bowling Green to start their family and begin his ophthalmology practice.

  • Dr. Paul founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, an organization that provides eye exams and surgery to needy families and individuals.
