Dr. Vasant Dhar is the Professor of Technology, Operations and Statistics at Stern School of Business and Ph.D. Program Director at the Center for Data Science at New York University. Dr. Dhar is also the host of the podcast, Brave New World, which explores how tech and virtualization in the post-COVID era is transforming humanity. He brought Machine Learning to Wall Street in the 90s, and subsequently founded SCT Capital Management, one of the first machine learning-based hedge funds in New York City. For more than 25 years, Dr. Dhar has built autonomous machine-learning-based predictive systems in various fields, including finance, healthcare, and primary education. His research and practice are grounded in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data—big and small. The major problem areas addressed in his research include finance, healthcare, education, business, sports, and transportation.
Dhar’s research focuses on how risk influences our trust in AI systems, and the focus on policy questions around the governance of data and digital platforms.
He pioneered the utilization of machine learning for predictive modeling on Wall Street across proprietary systematic trading, risk management, and salesforce management.
He also used machine learning as a testbed for understanding the properties of decision-making behavior of machines that learn from data.
More broadly, his research examines how innovations such as AI impact our lives, and how we can create tech and policy for a better future in a world of increasingly intelligent machines.
