Bill Smead is the Founder and Chairman of Smead Capital Management, an investment management firm and stock market investor. He created the firm's investment discipline and is the final decision-maker for investment and portfolio decisions. He is also responsible for reviewing the implementation of those decisions in the firm’s separate accounts and mutual funds. Bill has over 40 years of experience in the investment industry and specializes in value stocks. Prior to founding Smead Capital Management, he was Managing Director and Senior Portfolio at Wells Fargo Advisors, formerly Wachovia Securities.
Bill is responsible for all investment and portfolio decisions as well as reviewing the implementation of those decisions in the firm’s separate accounts and the Smead Value Fund.
The Smead Value Fund manages about $2.5 billion in assets. The European Ucits fund with the same positions has just under $215 million.
The firm advises investors that fear stock market failure through a low-turnover, differentiated value discipline seeking wonderful companies to build wealth.
EARLY CAREER
Bill started his career in the investment business with Drexel Burnham Lambert in 1980.
He joined Oppenheimer & Co. in 1989 as First Vice President and Assistant Manager.
After Oppenheimer & Co., he served as Senior Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager at Smith Barney, before transitioning to Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager at Wells Fargo.
