Michael Weinstock is Co-Founder, Co-Portfolio Manager, and CEO of Monarch Alternative Capital, a global opportunistic credit investment firm. Prior to founding Monarch in 2002, he was a Managing Director at Lazard Asset Management and served as Co-Portfolio Manager of the Lazard Debt Recovery Funds. Under his leadership, Lazard’s distressed debt research team was ranked #1 in the distressed debt category by Institutional Investor magazine in 1998. Prior to joining Lazard, Michael became a distressed debt research analyst in 1991 when he joined R.D. Smith & Co., a pioneer in the field of distressed debt investing. Before that, he was an investment banker for seven years at Salomon Brothers and Goldman Sachs working on corporate finance, securitization, and mergers and acquisitions transactions.
At Monarch, Michael manages a $13+ billion money management firm focused on distressed debt.
Monarch focuses primarily on distressed situations and opportunistic credit across corporate debt, structured credit, real estate, government debt, and special situations.
The firm uses a disciplined approach and dynamic sourcing to identify investments designed to deliver targeted results while maximizing capital preservation.

EARLY CAREER
Weinstock began his professional career in 1984 as an investment banker first with Salomon Brothers and later moving to Goldman Sachs.
At Goldman Sachs, he gained considerable experience and expertise working on corporate finance, securitization as well as mergers and acquisitions.
He joined R.D. Smith & Co., regarded as pioneers in the rapidly developing field of distressed debt investing.
He then joined Lazard to head their newly formed High Yield Bond Department to establish a distrissed debt department.
Under his leadership, Lazard’s distressed debt research team grew to become one of the more successful in the industry, even being ranked number one in the distressed debt category by the prestigious Institutional Investor magazine in 1998.
