Michael Howell is the Founder and Managing Director of CrossBorder Capital, a global research group focused on monitoring credit, liquidity conditions, and capital flows. He is focused on analyzing liquidity trends and capital flow data, utilizing them for investment decisions. Howell is a legendary market strategist who has become a prominent figure in analyzing global liquidity trends and their impact on markets. The liquidity methodology he pioneered monitors cross-border flows and central bank behavior across some 80 countries worldwide, serving as a vital part of the firm’s asset allocation advice which is currently provided to major global investors. Previously, he was Head of Research and a Board Member for ING Barings where he focused on Emerging Markets, and Research Director of Salomon Brothers, where he developed his quantitative liquidity research methodology.
EARLY CAREER & EXPERTISE
Howell was a Research Director at Salomon Brothers, subsequently being appointed to Head of Research at Baring Securities in 1992.
He has also advised the World Bank on capital flows, co-authoring their publication Opportunities in Emerging Markets (World Bank, 1995).
He served as board director of a listed Japanese investment trust and recently authored the book Capital Wars (Macmillan, 2020).
Prior to entering finance, Howell worked as Group Economist for Blue Circle Industries Plc.
He has been involved with educational charities and currently advises a major educational foundation on its investment strategy.
