Warren Irwin is the President and Chief Investment Officer of Rosseau Asset Management. He founded the firm in 1998 after several successful years of proprietary trading at Deutsche Bank Canada. Following business school, Irwin continued to strengthen his financial analysis and trading prowess working in general corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, credit analysis, and fixed income management for several firms. Irwin is also widely recognized as one of the savviest investors in the natural resource sector.

Academic History

  • Irwin started off as a bond analyst for Scotia Capital Markets.
  • At Deutsche Bank Canada, he focused on special situation investing, primarily in the high yield bonds, distressed debt, and resource sector equities. 
  • He was granted the CFA charter in 1990.
  • He is also famous for being one of the first investors to realize that Bre-X was a scam.
    • After buying in at $18 per share, he met the late Dale Hendrick upon his return from a site visit, whose mentorship and guidance helped him come to the conclusion Bre-X was a scam.
    • He sold all his Bre-X shares whilst they were still in the low $200s, before going short the stock and covering at 9 cents.
