Matt Halstead is a Director with the Teachers Retirement System of Texas, one of the world's largest investment funds. AT TRS, he leads the firm's Digital Asset Investing practice, and manages a global portfolio of real estate investments with responsibilities including new investment origination and strategy development. In 2012, he co-founded Chocolaterie Tessa, an artisan chocolate company he launched with his wife. Prior to his current role, he was responsible for sales and business development for the Vines of Mendoza, a private vineyard, winemaking and hospitality business based in Argentina. Halstead began his career at Archon Capital and Goldman Sachs Real Estate Mezzanine Partners, performing due diligence and underwriting of high-yield real estate debt investments.
Halstead leads the Digital Asset efforts of the firm, building the leading institutional investment business focused on early-stage investing.
He is responsible for identifying, underwriting and recommending potential fund and principal investments in most property types and strategies.
He also serves as a voting member of the Real Estate Investment Committee.
He was the winner of the 2021 TRS Excellence in Investing Award, a peer-determined award given to the most outstanding investor at TRS.
EARLY CAREER
As a sales manager and financial analyst at Vines of Mendoza, he was responsible for financial analysis, valuation, corporate accounting and investor relations.
He analyzed high-yield debt and preferred equity real estate investments, including direct originations and secondary market acquisitions, on behalf of Archon and Goldman Sachs.
