Boston College is a private institution established by the Jesuits and has maintained its Roman Catholic Jesuit religious affiliation. It was set up to educate the city’s predominantly Catholic Irish immigrant community. It is a research university known as “The Heights” to its residents, owing to its location perched in the village of Chestnut Hill in Massachusetts.
