Joseph Calandro Jr. is Managing Director in the Insurance Practice at PwC, specializing in strategy, underwriting, and mergers and acquisitions. At PwC, he is also responsible for cross-functional leadership, large-scale projects, profitable growth strategies, and analytics. Calandro is a risk and insurance executive and consultant with over 35 years of insurance and consulting experience across various disciplines, including business intelligence, analytics, and performance and risk management. He is also a Fellow of the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis at Fordham University, a contributing editor of Strategy & Leadership and a member of the non-profit Progress Through Business. Prior to PwC, he served in leadership roles in major organizations, including Chubb, IBM, and Berkshire Hathaway. He has authored over 45 articles on value investing in top-tier academic journals and also wrote “Applied Value Investing,” a textbook used in the Gabelli School’s Introduction to Value Investing course.
EARLY CAREER
Calandro served as VP and Enterprise Risk Manager for ACE Group, where he instituted the firm's global risk management framework and related risk appetite.
Before that, he was a Senior Manager at IBM, working on a wide range of strategy, finance, risk management, and performance management for several Fortune 100 firms.
He was a Senior Consultant for BearingPoint and a Second VP for Berkshire Hathaway.
He was a financial management consultant who worked on a variety of valuation, financial strategy, and risk management engagements.
He was a finance professor at the University of Connecticut where he taught value investing and risk management courses in the school’s MBA program.
His work has appeared at the Journal of Investing, Journal of Private Equity and the Journal of Alternative Investments.
He has presented papers at conferences held in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
