As CEO and CIO of Third Point LLC, Dan Loeb leads the hedge fund in investing across equity and credit securities in U.S. and international markets.
In addition to providing strategic guidance to numerous companies, he has served on five publicly traded company boards: Ligand Pharmaceuticals, POGO Producing Co., Massey Energy, Yahoo!, and Sotheby’s, where he helped oversee the successful sale of the company.
In recent activity, Third Point sold 900,000 shares of Alphabet Class A stock to exit its position in the last quarter of 2023.
The firm also significantly reduced its stakes in Uber, Amazon, Microsoft, and Taiwan Semiconductor, while increasing holdings in Meta during the same period.
EARLY CAREER
Dan Loeb began his finance career at Warburg Pincus (1984–1987), gaining experience in corporate development, risk arbitrage, and high-yield bond sales.
He later served as Senior Vice President at Jefferies and as Vice President of High Yield Bond Sales at Citigroup.
Loeb also held board positions at Massey Energy and Ligand Pharmaceuticals before founding Third Point.
PHILANTHROPY
Through The Margaret and Daniel Loeb Foundation, Loeb supports Alzheimer’s research, education reform, and LGBT rights.
The foundation funds initiatives that promote economic opportunity, education, and medical research.
He also launched a collaborative initiative with Paul Singer and the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBT civil rights organization in the U.S.
