Wright's interest in stock picking was kindled by his grandfather, a small business owner who had grown up during the Depression era.

He was also schooled in the principles of Modern Portfolio Theory and portfolio structure.
He also studied the great traders and investors, such as Jesse Livermore, Warren Buffett and George Soros.
He entered the financial services industry in 1984 as a stock broker, first with a private investment boutique in La Jolla and later with Dean Witter Reynolds.
