Agathe Demarais is a Senior Policy Fellow on Geoeconomics at the European Council on Foreign Relations, an award-winning international think tank. Her areas of interest include the global economy, geopolitics, and sanctions. Demarais is a leading voice on global issues and a thought leader on global affairs. Before joining ECFR, she was the Global Forecasting Director for The Economist Intelligence Unit, the research arm of The Economist. She led the EIU’s global economic and geopolitical analysis, with a particular focus on trade developments, emerging markets, and economic statecraft. Before that, she worked in investment banking in Russia and the United States. Demarais is a regular columnist at Foreign Policy and a frequent commentator for the media. She is the author of Backfire, a book on the global ripple effects of sanctions and export controls.
Demarais leads ECFR’s Re:Order project in the field of geoeconomics, which explores emerging visions of the global order, as well as the interplay between economic might and geopolitical influence.

EARLY CAREER
She led EIU’s global economic and geopolitical forecasting, connecting the dots in the analysis of the organization’s analysts across the world.
Prior to joining EIU, she worked in the diplomatic corps of the French Treasury.
She spent five years in Russia and three years in the Middle East, where she developed her knowledge of sanctions and policy making.
