Michael Sonnenshein is a digital asset industry executive and crypto veteran best known as the former Chief Executive Officer of Grayscale Investments, the world’s largest digital currency asset manager. During his tenure, Grayscale expanded its leadership position in institutional crypto investing, offering a broad suite of investment products spanning single asset trusts and diversified digital asset funds. Before joining Grayscale, Sonnenshein worked in traditional finance, serving as a Financial Advisor at JPMorgan Securities, where he advised high net worth individuals and institutional clients. He earlier held the role of Analyst at Barclays Wealth, providing investment coverage to middle market hedge funds and institutional investors. Sonnenshein has been recognized for his impact on the financial services and digital asset industries. Over the course of Michael Sonnenshein’s decade-long tenure at Grayscale Investments, he helped build the firm into the world’s largest digital asset manager, overseeing tens of billions of dollars in assets under management at its peak.
During this period, Grayscale became a cornerstone of institutional crypto investing and a primary access point for investors seeking regulated exposure to digital assets.
Under his leadership, Grayscale significantly expanded and diversified its product lineup, growing to more than 20 investment products spanning single asset trusts and diversified digital asset funds.
Sonnenshein played a central role in the firm’s strategic evolution, including Grayscale’s successful effort to convert its flagship Bitcoin Trust into a U.S. listed spot bitcoin ETF following regulatory approval in early 2024.
In addition to product innovation, Sonnenshein oversaw the firm’s day to day operations and long term growth strategy. He maintained key institutional relationships with financial advisors, family offices, hedge funds, and other professional investors.
Sonnenshein concluded his 10 year tenure as CEO of Grayscale Investments in May 2024. He was succeeded by Peter Mintzberg, a former Goldman Sachs executive.
