Nonprofit entities further social causes and provide public benefit. A nonprofit serves the public, whether through the offering of goods or services, often organizations including churches, public schools, public charities, public clinics and hospitals, political organizations, legal aid societies, volunteer services organizations, labor unions, professional associations, research institutes, museums, and some governmental agencies. Nonprofits receive exemption from various taxes in recognition of their contributions to bettering the general social fabric of the community.
